MOL Group Announces Readiness to Produce HVO and SAF at Bratislava Refinery

MOL Group has reached a milestone in producing HVO and SAF at its Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava. The products’ quality was verified by Isotoptech Zrt, confirming the correct HVO ratio.

The test confirmed MOL’s readiness to produce alternative synthetic fuels.MOL Group produced HVO from cashew nut shell oil, co-processing it with crude oil.

The company has used this method at its Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta for years, reducing emissions by mixing plant residues with fossil components during production. The Bratislava Refinery also produced SAF through co-processing, using partially refined cooking oil and conventional materials.

This experiment showed that the refinery can produce both aviation kerosene and SAF.“We are ready to produce biodiesel and SAF, contributing to MOL Group’s sustainable efforts and the smart energy transition,” said Csaba Zsótér, Senior VP for Fuels.Gabriel Szabó, Vice Chairman of Slovnaft and MOL Group’s Vice President of Downstream, stated that passing the test confirms Slovnaft’s key role in the CEE region and the need to evolve its chemical production expertise.

Slovnaft and MOL Group are partnering with the Technical University of Kosice to test SAF.EU targets aim for SAF to make up 2% of aviation fuel in 2025, 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, and 70% by 2050 for all EU flights.
