Abia Lawmakers Hail Aba Power Free Meter Program

Two Abia State lawmakers, Aaron Uzodike and Uche Onye, praised Aba Power for distributing 20,000 smart meters free of charge, following an inspection of the rollout in Aba. The initiative, costing over N3.4 billion, is part of a larger effort involving multiple metering firms, including local company Kayz Consortium. The lawmakers commended Geometric Power for supporting local production and fast-tracking the project, which was launched in response to consumer concerns over meter shortages.

Hon. Uche Onye expressed satisfaction with Aba Power’s goal of installing smart meters for 100,000 customers this year.He praised the improved system of installing individual meters for each flat—four meters for four flats, eight for eight flats—replacing the old practice of using a single meter per compound, which often caused disputes among residents.“This approach promotes fairness, transparency, and encourages responsible electricity use,” he noted.Onye also commended Aba Power’s strategy of distributing meters “feeder by feeder and end to end,” calling it a method that fosters order, trust, and peace.

Currently, customers along the Aba-Owerri Feeder—including Umuode Village, Tonimas Junction, Old Aba-Owerri Expressway, and Power Line Area—are receiving meters. The Aba Ring-fenced Area, covering nine of Abia State’s 17 LGAs, has 31 feeders in total. Four feeders were fully metered in the program’s first phase.
