Anambra State Set to Launch Electricity Regulatory Commission

The Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC), an independent body to oversee the state’s electricity sector, will be unveiled soon, following recent approval by the Anambra State Executive Council. Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engineer Julius Chukwuemeka, highlighted the initiative as part of the state’s plan to achieve stable, affordable, and sustainable electricity.

He emphasized the importance of reliable power supply in driving economic growth and industrialization, noting that industries cannot thrive without electricity.Anambra is set for a power sector overhaul with the upcoming launch of its Electricity Regulatory Commission. Commissioner Julius Chukwuemeka said the state now has legal backing to manage its own electricity market, following the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023 and the signing of Anambra’s own Electricity Law by Governor Soludo. He noted the state’s push for 24/7, eco-friendly power and highlighted the growing use of solar energy by homes and small businesses as part of a green energy shift.

Commissioner Julius Chukwuemeka revealed that Anambra is attracting investor interest in converting its high waste volume into bioenergy, turning environmental challenges into energy opportunities. He noted that proposals are underway to process waste into biodiesel and other clean energy forms. Highlighting Anambra’s rising status as a model for sub-national power reforms, he praised Governor Soludo’s leadership and expressed confidence that with new laws, a regulatory agency, and private sector partnerships, the state will soon enjoy stable, affordable, and cleaner electricity.
