The U.S. Department of the Interior announced a new USGS assessment identifying 473 million barrels of oil and 27 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Mowry Composite Petroleum System across Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.
Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the findings’ importance for U.S. energy independence and economic growth. The system, active since the 1950s, has already produced 7.3 trillion cubic feet of gas and 90 million barrels of oil.Acting USGS Director Sarah Ryker said the latest assessment reveals substantial undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas in the Mowry Composite Petroleum System.
This geologic area in southwestern Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah was last assessed in 2005 and contains ancient ocean deposits.
