Equinor Discovers Gas in Halten Area, Norwegian Sea

Equinor and partners discovered gas and condensate in Norway’s Halten area, estimating 19-44 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent. They plan to assess commercial development options.Equinor’s Mistral Sør lies north of Linnorm, Norway’s largest undeveloped gas find. It now holds a 50% stake after acquiring Shell’s 30% share in April 2024.

Linnorm holds an estimated 25-30 bcm of recoverable gas.The Norwegian Offshore Directorate said wildcat well 6406/6-7 S is the first in license 1119 but the fifth in the area. Equinor’s VP Grete B. Haaland stressed Norwegian gas’s importance to Europe’s energy security.

Haaland stressed the need for continued exploration to sustain gas deliveries. The discovery is in an area with existing infrastructure and ongoing development.Drilled by Odfjell’s Deepsea Atlantic, Mistral Sør targeted Middle Jurassic sandstones.

Well 6406/6-7 S found a 45-meter hydrocarbon column in the Garn Formation with good reservoir quality. It reached 4,024 meters deep in 256 meters of water.The secondary target yielded no hydrocarbons.Equinor said the well will be plugged, and Deepsea Atlantic will move to drill 15/8-G-4 Utgard.Equinor operates license 1119 (2021–2027) with a 50% stake, alongside OKEA (30%) and Pandion Energy (20%).
