EU Endorses Nine Green Energy Initiatives in Finland and Estonia

The European Commission has awarded €52 million ($58.7 million) through the EU Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism to support nine renewable energy projects in Finland and Estonia. Aimed at boosting EU renewable capacity and cross-border cooperation, the projects will add 445.65 MW of capacity by 2027–2028. Seven solar PV projects in Finland will receive funding, including Laivakangas, Lamminneva, and Isoneva Solar Parks, which will convert former gravel and peat sites into solar facilities.

The European Commission is funding additional renewable projects in Finland and Estonia, repurposing former industrial sites. In Finland, the Lålby Solar Power Park will be built on a former waste deposit site with €5.9 million in funding, while Kouvola’s Lakiasuo PV Plant will receive €7.7 million to convert peatlands into a large-scale solar facility. Other funded projects include JoSoleilTwo (€5.7 million), Pori Peittoo (€1.1 million), and several solar PV sites. In Estonia, two onshore wind projects—the Püssi Project and Maima Wind Park—received €9.8 million and €8.2 million, respectively.

The European Commission launched the RENEWFM in 2020 to promote renewable energy development throughout the EU by linking countries that provide funding with those that host the projects. In the case of the Estonia and Finland initiatives, Luxembourg served as the contributing nation, according to the Commission.
