Green Flare Holding Aims to Generate Power from Flared Gas

Green Flare Holdings, a climate-tech startup, has developed technology to convert flare gas—waste gas from oil production—into electricity. The power generated will initially support Bitcoin mining data centers and later expand to AI and cloud computing hubs. Using mobile generators, Green Flare captures gas that is typically flared and produces off-grid electricity.

Nigeria flares about 1 billion cubic feet of gas daily, enough for 9 GW of power. Green Flare’s first three sites in Delta State will generate 53 MW, with plans to scale up and provide low-cost energy to global tech companies.Green Flare’s approach, similar to U.S. firms Crusoe Energy and Marathon Digital, taps into Nigeria’s vast flared gas and growing computing needs. It aims to produce Bitcoin at costs 75% lower than the industry average.

The startup links climate goals with digital infrastructure by converting waste gas into power, potentially making Nigeria a low-cost computing hub. Despite challenges like regulation and gas supply, the opportunity is significant given Nigeria’s small current role in global Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure, and the high cost of gas flaring.
