Parliament Committee Warns UK May Fall Short of 2030 Clean Energy Target

The UK is at risk of missing its 2030 goal for a clean power grid due to planning delays, infrastructure issues, and reduced private investment. A report from the House of Lords warns that achieving 95% low-carbon electricity will require a much faster buildout of energy generation and infrastructure. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband face mounting pressure, with critics calling their net-zero plans costly and unrealistic. Recent setbacks include Ørsted canceling a major North Sea wind farm and SSE reducing its renewables pipeline. Reaching the target will require around £40 billion in annual investment.

The committee recommends the government publish progress on clean energy targets every six months. It also suggests switching from a national to a zonal pricing system to better utilize grid infrastructure and reduce consumer bills. However, the report warns that the impact on immobile generators and large consumers must be carefully assessed, with potential transitional support considered.
