PETROAN Urges Prompt Rehab of NNPCL Refineries to Lower Transportation Costs

PETROAN has called for the timely completion of rehabilitation works on the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries, expressing concern over repeated delays despite NNPC’s assurances. While applauding the start of the Old Port Harcourt refinery, the association emphasized the urgent need for transparency and accountability in commissioning the larger Port Harcourt refinery and the other two refineries.

PETROAN demands a clear, realistic timeline from NNPC for completing and commissioning the new Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries, especially the second Port Harcourt project. The new Port Harcourt refinery will serve 13 states and reduce high transportation costs. The association urges transparency and regular updates to address fuel scarcity. PETROAN’s president called on President Tinubu to form a high-level panel of stakeholders to identify delays, find solutions, and ensure timely completion.

PETROAN’s president said the refineries’ completion will boost Nigeria’s petroleum supply and stabilize prices but expressed concern over delays. He called for accountability on project funds and urged NNPC’s CEO to quickly appoint a Managing Director for the Port Harcourt refinery to avoid further setbacks.“This appointment is crucial to provide leadership and steer the project toward timely completion,” Gillis-Harris said. He added that the ongoing delay hinders Nigeria’s goal of petroleum self-sufficiency and worsens the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
