SON Issues Warning About Surge of Counterfeit Engine Oil in Nigeria

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged collective action to combat the rise of fake engine oil and lubricants, warning these substandard products threaten vehicles, machinery, and the economy.

SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, highlighted these risks during an awareness event in Osogbo focused on the impact of adulterated engine oil on Nigeria’s economy.SON warns fake lubricants shorten engine life, raise costs, and hurt Nigeria’s economy. Poor-quality oil causes machine failures and financial losses, slowing growth. SON urges use of certified products, ethical sales, and increased consumer awareness to protect industry and boost productivity.

At the workshop, Tijjani Sahib, Chairman of Osun’s Engine Oil Dealers Association, praised SON and urged members to use genuine engine oil. SON’s Ekiti Coordinator, Sangosanya Olatunji, highlighted benefits of quality oil like fuel efficiency and lower emissions, calling on all stakeholders to support SON’s efforts to ensure only quality lubricants are sold.
