WED 2025: Chevron Nigeria Sets Standards in Waste Management Practices

This report highlights key initiatives by Chevron Nigeria Limited to address climate change and environmental impacts through effective waste management, particularly focusing on reducing plastic waste. Since 1973, June 5 has been observed as World Environment Day (WED), promoting awareness of issues like marine pollution and global warming. This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” emphasizes the urgent need to combat plastic pollution, a major environmental challenge affecting oceans, rivers, and landfills.

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) supports the global effort to combat plastic pollution, aligning with its commitment to environmental protection and providing cleaner energy. CNL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Jim Swartz, emphasized that this year’s World Environment Day theme reflects the company’s core values of minimizing environmental impact, responsible operations, and stewardship. Chevron focuses on responsible asset management and implementing business practices to improve waste management and reduce the harmful effects of plastic waste.

Chevron Nigeria is reducing single-use plastics by providing water dispensers and investing in waste shredding and recycling equipment. Their Operational Excellence Management System ensures safety and environmental care throughout asset lifecycles. CNL is also lowering carbon emissions by using Optical Gas Imaging to detect leaks and cutting gas flaring by over 97%. Since 1992, CNL has supported the Lekki Conservation Centre, environmental scholarships, awareness lectures, and conservation events with partners like the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Lagos State Government.

Olusoga Oduselu, CNL’s General Manager, stressed the company’s long-standing commitment to biodiversity conservation through partnerships with communities and stakeholders. For over 60 years, Chevron Nigeria has championed sustainable development. As plastic pollution remains a global focus, CNL pledges to continue collaborating with partners to raise awareness and drive environmental change for a sustainable future, says Jim Swartz.
